West Country Walling Services

Dry Stone Walling

The core of our work involves building walls, steps, curves, sculptures, ponds, stiles, archways and moongates using traditional and ancient dry stone techniques and natural stone.  When the construction requirements dictate, we are also happy to use mortar, preferably lime-based, which is sympathetic with the limestone we work with.

We run a team of craftsmen who all work to the same high standard and have a deep understanding about the principles of working with dry stone.  Although very labour intensive, the walls and features we create will outlive us all.  Creating boundaries in dry stone is a wonderful long term solution for your property or estate.

Landscaping

Constructing dry stone walls often requires an element of hard landscaping to ensure that the foundations are sound and that finished sight levels are considered before building.  In addition to these landscaping services, we also provide traditional pathways, paving, gates and fencing which complement our dry stone work.

Stone Supply

Weathered Stone

This is ancient stone that has been built with probably many times over the centuries. The stone is generally quite dark and often green. This stone is a reclaimed material and its price fluctuates depending on the condition and availability of the stone. We carry a stock of weathered stone and can source additional stone when required.

New Stone

There are numerous quarries in the West Country and colours of stone vary between quarries from golden through mellow honey and grey to almost white depending on the area and strata being quarried

Lighting

It is becoming popular to encase lighting systems within dry stone walls to bring the walls and surrounding areas alive during the night

Maintenance

Simple annual maintenance can help extend the lifespan of a wall by many years. The main reason that dry stone walls deteriorate is due to the invasion of plants and trees such as ivy and elder. We provide customer guidance on the upkeep of walls and offer a maintenance service if required.
